An hourlong results episode of “So You Think You Can Dance” drew 8.2 million viewers on Thursday to help push Fox into first place for the night’s ratings, according to Nielsen’s estimates.
Pizza night on “Hell’s Kitchen” and the start of Neil Diamond week on “American Idol” lifted Fox to No. 1 in the ratings on Tuesday. Nielsen estimated that 24.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the five remaining “Idol” contestants square off at 8 p.m. After “Idol,” Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” delivered 12.3 million viewers, the largest audience ever in the series’ three-year history. The cooking competition led the 9 p.m. time slot among adults 18 to 49, but trailed ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in total viewers in the hour (16.7 million). Despite its edge at 9, ABC ranked third over all, struggling early in the night with two episodes of “According to Jim,” each averaging around 4 million viewers. CBS won second place, thanks to “NCIS” at 8 (14.6 million) and “Shark” at 9 (10.3 million). NBC was fourth for the night, despite leading the 10 p.m. hour with “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (12.1 million), which easily outpaced both ABC’s “Women’s Murder Club” on ABC (8.1 million) and a rerun of “CSI” on CBS (7.6 million).
Despite competing opposite “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars,” the fifth season finale of “The Biggest Loser” delivered NBC’s largest audience in the 8 to 10 p.m. time period on Tuesday in nearly eight months. Ali Vincent became the first female winner of the series, shedding nearly 48 percent of her body weight, as the finale attracted an average of 11.2 million viewers, Nielsen reported. Among adults 18 to 49 “The Biggest Loser” drew the night’s third-highest ratings behind only Fox’s “American Idol,” which attracted 23 million total viewers during the 8 p.m. hour, and NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” which led the 10 p.m. hour with 13.3 million viewers. NBC ranked second for the night overall behind Fox. ABC edged past CBS for third place in total viewers thanks to “Dancing With the Stars” at 9 (15 million). CBS’s “NCIS” fared nearly as well, however, at 8 p.m. with 14.9 million viewers.
CBS’s sci-fi show “Jericho” limped across the finish line on Tuesday, attracting just under six million viewers for its series finale, Nielsen reported. “Jericho,” first canceled last spring but revived over the summer after an outcry from devoted fans, only to be canceled once again, finished third in its 10 p.m. slot, behind ABC’s “Primetime” (10.4 million) and a repeat of NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (8.5 million). CBS ranked fourth for the night, despite drawing higher ratings with an “NCIS” rerun at 8 (9.4 million), followed at 9 by “Big Brother,” which also attracted 6 million viewers but fared better than “Jericho” among adults 18 to 49. Fox easily led over all, thanks to a 90-minute edition of “American Idol” from 8 to 9:30 (24.4 million). ABC was second with “Dancing With the Stars” at 9 (17.2 million). NBC finished third.
The sixth-season premiere of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” attracted 20.9 million viewers on Monday, Nielsen estimated, leading ABC to first place for the night. The premiere of “The Bachelor,” which followed “Dancing With the Stars,” averaged considerably less: 9 million viewers from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. CBS earned a solid second place thanks to the return of its comedy lineup: “The Big Bang Theory” at 8 (9.1 million), “How I Met Your Mother” at 8:30 (9.7 million), “Two and a Half Men” at 9 (14 million) and “The New Adventures of Old Christine” at 9:30 (11.5 million). NBC was third over all, with “My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad” at 8 (4.7 million) and “Deal or No Deal” at 9 (9.9 million).
